Castro Marim Golfe and Country Club

Castro Marim

Description

'Undulating contours, interesting views, well worth a visit' is what Algarve Golf & Property Magazine has to say about Castro Marim Golfe & Country Club.
The variety provided by the three nine hole courses - The Guadiana, The Atlantic and The Grouse - means you'll never get tired of playing golf here.

It's fair to say that all of the 27 golf holes are memorable. In fact, the fourth hole on the Atlantic Course features in the book '1001 Golf Holes you must play before you die', edited by Jeff Barr.
The courses, with their Bermuda grass fairways, are always in good condition and buggies are allowed on the fairways.

Castro Marim Golfe already made us curious when driving the entrance road and seeing some of the holes to be played. Training facilities where ok, although the puttinggreen was not to big and occupied with large groups. We played the Atlantic and Grouse course, leaving the Guadiana for purhapse another visit. Atlantic course, the oldest of the 2 courses made the most impression on me, starting at teebox hole 1. Only downside was the fact that on this course some teeboxes strike earlier greens, so you had to wait every now and then before entering the next teebox, from my point of view avoidable in this surroundings. The fareways and routing was undulating, making a buggy for some players a must, but certainly doable without -and handycart are for rental at the clubhouse-. Rearriving at the clubhouse even the Dutch famous Bitterballs are ready to be ordered, a good stop during holidays to play a round of nice golf.

The Castro Marim golf course is a short, though very interesting option when playing in the area. The course design is something else. Even hole is unique and wanders through a great landscape with a beautifully designed club house on top of the hill. The Atlantic course is most typical and with good iron on short game gives you the opportunity to score well. The Grouse course is a bit more open with longer holes. The downside when we played in early spring 2018 were the greens. Due to heavy rain and underground irrigation in combination with dry areas, the greens varied in speed. In addition, especially at the Grouse course, the roughs were rocky and might damage your clubs if you want to save your score. Castro Marim was all in all a great experience, that in combination with playing on see side courses like Quinta da Ria, will provide a dynamic Algarve golf tour.

Last week I played two tournaments on Castro Marim. We played The Guadiana and Grouse courses. At first I was shocked by the lay-out. Weird holes with fairways tilting from right to left and back. But as the week progressed I started to like it. For professionals the course is a bit short, but challenging in it's own way. Castro Marim is not the best you can play in the Algarve, but it's enjoyable. I think it's built for the beginning golfer and they will have a good time. The facilities are decent and the clubhouse big and organized.
